When childhood friends Nan Caple and Jenny Watt reached the top of Constitution Hill and saw green slopes cascading down towards Snellings Beach, they knew they had found their own little slice of paradise.
The pair and their families had enjoyed many holidays around Kangaroo Island, but no other place had been as captivating as this lookout, where kangaroos munched on grass, indifferent to the dramatic clouds sweeping out towards Gulf St Vincent.
On a whim, Nan and Jenny bought land on the hill and immediately set about creating the ideal luxury escape.
Architecturally designed to capture natural light while maximising privacy from its hilltop vantage point, Snellings View comprises two beautifully appointed and self-contained wings connected by a communal, reception-style area. Each wing contains one master bedroom with queen bed and ensuite, and a second bedroom also with queen bed and ensuite, plus the option to customise sleeping arrangements for families. Every bedroom enjoys uninterrupted views of the seascape and the two wings share an exterior dining courtyard.
Snellings View was conceived as a self-serviced escape from the modern world. Located 45 minutes from town, and with no Wi-Fi, guests are instead invited to embrace relaxed island living.
“We love to spend days swimming at Snellings Beach, just a short walk down the hill, watching over the dolphins that sometimes like to play nearby,” says Nan. “If we’ve been fishing during the day, we cook our catch on the barbecue and watch as the stars start to pop out over the water. There’s so much to enjoy around the property and across Kangaroo Island, but for me just reading a book on the deck or watching the neighbourhood wedge-tailed eagles is such a treat.”
